March 10th– French Natural Wines from Louis/Dressner Selections
January 10, 2018 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Kevin McKenna, one of the partners of Louis/Dressner Selections, will take us along on a journey featuring French natural wines. Since its inception Louis/Dressner has honed a portfolio developed to bring authentic wines to the United States. In the mid-1980s, Joe Dressner and his life partner, Denyse Louis, a native Burgundian, began spending extended breaks at the Louis’ family home in the Maconnaise. While that era may be remembered as the pinnacle of French industrial wine production, Dressner and Louis observed that the wines they enjoyed most came from growers who remained small, hand-harvested their grapes and relied on native yeasts. These practices became the criteria for the portfolio of producers that are imported to the United States by Louis/Dressner Selections, now LDM, for Louis-Dressner-McKenna.
As a buyer for Astor Place Wines in New York for 5 years, Kevin was an early proponent of L/DS, noting and enjoying the difference of the wines that they represented. In 1996, Kevin was recruited by Joe and Denyse to launch L/DS as a national importer. Having lived in Rome and fluent in Italian, Kevin also extended the L/DS book to include Italian natural wines.
Kevin spends several months a year abroad, tasting new vintages, treated to older vintages and generally developing and maintaining strong relationships with the vignerons and families to which they are committed. As Kevin observed to Eric Asimov in 2011, “[i]t’s always been about the winemakers, how they work and their vision.” Kevin will bring those winemakers– their stories and practices, to us as we experience them through their wine.
